Whereas the standards of the second generation or 2G lie with 9,6 Kbit/s to 220 Kbit/s, the speed of the 3G technology with 384 Kbit/s to 7,2 Mbit/s is considerably higher. While the 3G standard can now be used worldwide, a 4G or fourth generation mobile technology is being developed at the same time. 4G will aim at even faster data transmission rates of a 100 Mbit/s up to 1Gbit/s and the overall enhancement of the existing mobile communication systems. But not only the mobile communication standards are being improved by the minute, also manufacturers of mobile phones are keeping track of new requirementsn via feedback from phone shops and consumers alike.

Not only since the launch of the iPhone do manufacturers aim at a bigger display to enjoy the various functions of 3G technology. Manufacturers try to maintain the mobility of mobile phones in keeping them at a considerable small size, but at the same time need to fit in all the requirements needed to enjoy wireless internet and other functions of the recent improvements of mobile communication standards. As a result, most new mobile phones feature a touch screen, in order to minimise the space taken up by a keyboard and maximise the screen quality. Mobile phones nowadays are not only required any more to make voice calls at any time and from anywhere, but regarding the advances in mobile communication technology, now rather need to function as small, portable computers as well.
