It is not the same as sympathy or compassion for another. Nor is it a form of telepathy, where a person knows how you feel because he or she is reading your mind. Empathy is a whole different ability. This is a deeper level of connection that lets one feel what the other one is actually feeling and to understand these feelings. During an empathy reading, the reader must be able to tell his or her own feelings apart from those felt by the querent.
An empathy reading usually offers a better psychic connection than other types of psychic readings. Imagine the reader literally putting himself or herself in your shoes. This is a good way for him or her to fully understand your situation and give you insight from a third person point of view.
Some empaths may not be able to feel what you feel directly, but are able to tap into the energy and emotions that surround you. In this case, an empath reading is somewhat similar to an aura reading.
There are different terminologies associated with empaths. They are sometimes called psychic empaths, sensitive or clairsentient (“clear feeling”) psychics.
