Philippians 4:8 ( NKJV ) 8Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
What do you spend most of your time thinking about? Do you spend time thinking how do advance the kingdom of God or how to get what you want? How important is your prayer life and do you have a genuine time of devotion to thank God and mediate on his word?
Too many of us Christians are thinking about the wrong things, I know I’m guilty. Our attention is on advancing in our careers, starting our families, buying material things and simply living a comfortable life. The problem is that simply isn’t biblical, we are saved for a purpose more than living a comfortable life, in fact, if anything we are saved to bring tension between light and darkness. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing with having nice things, plenty of money or a nice family, but the problem is, Christians spend so much time pursuing these things that nothing is done to advance the kingdom of God. Our priorities are confused and we are thinking about the wrong things. As a result, our spiritual senses are dull or even worst, nearly dead and in desperate need of life support.
As children of God, Christians are to first seek after God and pleasing him (Matt. 6:33). Many of us now seek after pleasing ourselves and unfortunately a large number of churches and a lot of them are mega churches with big named teachers encourage pursing material gain instead of exhorting members to pursing holiness.
The battle is for the control of the mind. If the enemy can get us to think about ourselves or what is going on around us instead of mediating on righteousness he has us. Our thought life has to brought under control daily. The apostle Paul wrote in Romans that we are transformed by the renewing of our minds (12:2). Paul used an action verb indicating renewing is something that must be done on a continuous basis. There is all kind of things trying to get our attention, most of them are ungodly, which is why we need to think biblically. Do you strive to keep your mind free of clutter and trash from your worldly environment? Which has more influence on you, the word of God or Hollywood?
When we live by the command that the apostle Paul gave in Philippians 4:8 our live itself becomes a ministry, instead of being infected by culture we will affect those around, remember Jesus said he’ll draw men (John 12 :32). People will notice when we refuse to engage in gospel, but encourage instead. People will notice when we refuse to leave work a little early than we should or own up to a mistake that we could have easily gotten away with. People notice when we rejoice in good news of others even though we have nothing to personally gain from it.
Jesus said as a man thinketh so is he. If you think carnal thoughts you are carnal, If your thoughts are doing the will God, you have the mind of Christ and you are Christlike. So let’s get our mind right and think right, mediate on godly things.
