The type of accommodation provided for those on a holiday varies from place to place & resort to resort. It may include villas, apartments, back packers, bed & breakfast, camps, tents, caravan hire, cottages, caravan parks, group accommodation, hotels, cabin, lodges, hostels or farm stays.
Europe & UK have great opportunities for self catered accommodation for family holidays. Some places famous for these are Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France & Switzerland.

The advantage of such holidays is that such a self catering holiday does'nt just let you save in terms of the price of your holiday but are also a feasible option when one plans to holiday abroad. Although people like getting pampered by services in hotels, it may not be very appealing due to the expenses involved. It is much cheaper to go & buy oneself drinks from a neighbouring supermarket rather than ordering them in the hotel. Similarly food costs are also very high within hotels & people prefer to eat out. Also self catering holidays give one the flexibility of eating out in order to add variety instead of eating all meals in the same hotel. One also tends to save on the breakfast costs & as a result the total holiday cost comes down. Accommodation which is self catering does not provide very extensive & elaborate arrangements but care is taken for daily utilities & necessities. Pots & pans, kitchen utensils, & other equipment is provided so that it is easy to cook simple meals. Gadgets like microwave, fridge, oven may also be provided. If going in for such self catered accommodation on a holiday one must check the facilities available & availability of other tools & knick knacks so that one is well equipped with things that might not be available.

Most of the self catered accommodation in UK will have some basic common characteristics like beautiful interiors, spacious rooms, good view, good location, en-suite bathrooms, enclosed gardens, eco friendly, hot tubs, internet access, wheel chair access, television, good connectivity to a near by town or city, restaurants & pubs close by, off season discounts & most of all, value for money.
