With a little pre-holiday homework, however, your next family holiday can be sure to be one that is filled with happy memories. One of the most important factors of a family holiday is family input. Where do the parents want to go? And the children? When children are given an active role in planning the holiday, they are much more excited when the time actually comes. Now, this does not mean you need to go to Disneyland on every holiday, but do give your children opportunity to look at brochures of different places and have them look up their favourite things to do in each place.
If both you and your children do your homework ahead of time and find ideas of what you’d like to see, then sightseeing becomes an adventure rather than a chore. Children and adults alike are more excited about what they are going to see on holiday, rather than being tired and cranky from all that traveling. The internet, of course, is a fantastic resource for doing your homework on places to go and things to do. It is a good idea to first look at local tourist sites and see what there is to do. Then you can look at other travel where visitors comment on the things they saw and what to do. Another great tip is to talk with the locals. If you know anyone who lives where you are going, they can often tell you neat things to see that are a bit off the beaten tourist path. They can usually give you great restaurant recommendations as well. One more good resource is travel books. I prefer the Eyewitness travel guide series because they are full of photographs, excellent maps, and good charts full of hotel and restaurant information. The more research you do, the more excited your family will be about the holiday, and you will have a good idea of how to make the best use of your time.
Good packing is also an essential part of a good family holiday. Plan enough ahead of time that you can write down a packing list of what you’ll need. Start a pile of important papers (passports, hotel reservations, etc.) by your suitcase. Check the weather forecast before you leave as well. The lighter you pack, the happier you will be on vacation. Nothing is worse than having to drag heavy suitcases up flights of stairs or through downtown of a busy city when you are tired from a day’s travels. Plan ahead, take what you need, but don’t overpack. With good preparation and including the children in the planning of your family holiday, you are sure to have a fun and memorable experience.
