Despite the projected decline in demand for trips to European destinations this summer, Spain and Portugal are still proving popular among UK tourists. The combination of increased competitiveness amongst travel providers and holiday home companies during the recession, as well as a sudden period of bad weather at home, has seen an increase in searches for properties and last minute cheap sun holidays.

In an article at world-first.co.uk, expert in properties abroad John Reilly claims that Portugal will always appeal to Brits due to the great beaches, as well as the abundance of cheap flights. Popular areas such as the Algarve on the southern coast are regarded as upmarket destinations - yet, still offer a lot of choice in terms of holiday homes.

Reilly also points out that the once expensive town of Vilamoura in Loule has now become affordable to UK residents. Located near Faro, the purpose built resort is famed for its lavish hotels and large marina at the heart of a vibrant and highly-rated area. His claims are upheld by research published from homeoverseas.co.uk, which shows that properties in Portugal are the most searched-for on the website.

Similarly, with the recent interest in European holidays as the UK gets wetter, Spain has also proven to be well searched for online. According to timesonline.co.uk, travel experts Expedia have found that the Costa Daurada on Spain's east coast has seen a 119 percent increase in internet searches compared to last year.

The Costa Daurada refers to 216 kilometre long stretch of Mediterranean coastline south of Barcelona. Naturally, the further from Spain's second biggest city, the quieter the beaches get, whilst many of the towns in the area are well planned for tourism.

Despite this huge increase, it was not the biggest. Dubrovnick in Croatia has had a surge of 129 percent more searches as it garners a reputation as a cost-friendly summer destination. Additionally, Hawaii saw a 90 percent increase.
