Honeymoons to the most exotic locations are becoming more and more traditional for western couples. Over the last 50 years, the development of the west and increased connections to the rest of the world have made it ever easier to go abroad somewhere new and exciting at this special time in our lives. Of course, honeymoon places don’t just have to be exotic and/or faraway, they must also be romantic – and what makes a place romantic? A unique destination? One that is being explored for the first time? Or a place that is steeped in culture? Here are my favorite honeymoon places for 2009 (travelling from the UK).

Paris:
France’s capital may seem like an obvious choice, even clichéd, but in regards to the economic climate – its short distance from the UK might make it more practical in order to save on travel expenses. That said, Paris certainly doesn’t have the reputation as one of the world’s most romantic cities for nothing. Neo-classical and bourgeois architecture is the perfect backdrop as you wander down wide avenues between patisseries and restaurants. There are sights and attractions in abundance – for the culturally-minded couple.

Fiji:
Fiji could be the destination for you, if exotic scenery and tropical isolation is more your cup of tea. Situated in the South Pacific, East of Australia, this archipelago is a startling example of impressive natural habitats that are untainted by civilization – with many islands and islets. Turtle Island was the honeymoon spot for Britney Spears, but the largest islands of Viti Levu to the south and Vanua Levu to the north cater for more appealing budgets. Additionally, the primary language of Fiji is English.

India:
India is a diversely intense country, but one that will amaze and excite in equal measure – and offer an experience that will never be forgotten. Agra is home to arguably the most romantic building in the word, The Taj Mahal (for Shah Jahan’s favourite wife), but the city is also home to many more attractive wonders, such as the Agra Fort and the Fatehpur Sikri. There is also over 7,000 km for the beach lovers and skiing in Manali.

Rome:
The historical city of Rome again benefits from being in the Eurozone. In spite of the mix of ancient, renaissance, and neo-classical architecture again acts as the perfect backdrop for love. The city is also rife with parks and natural areas, as well as aristocratic villas which are open to the public and great for getting away from the hubbub. With the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine, it is no wonder that the city has been officially named a World Heritage Site.
