Camping in the Snow

February might seem a strange month in which to take a hiking and camping holiday in England, and I would normally agree whole heartedly with that sentiment, but a few years ago a friend persuaded me to go camping with him in the Peak District in Derbyshire during early February. We would be doing a lot of walking in remote areas along with some hill walking and maybe some climbing, so we were very careful about ensuring that we had all the right equipment and sufficient warm and waterproof clothing. We also took a proper winter tent that we hired, this really was a self catering holiday like no other!.

We started our hike at Kinder Scout after leaving the car at Edale. When we set off it was cold and a little windy but it was dry underfoot and there was no snow. The snow started after we had covered about five miles and by the time we reached Kinder it was a good ten cm deep and the going was getting very tough indeed. We decided to pitch the tent. Neither of us had pitched on snow before but it wasn't too bad. Once the tent was up we were able to relax and take in the beauty and splendid isolation of our surroundings and cook some food.

We eventually settled down for the night. It was quite cold getting into our sleeping bags, but once in them it didn't take too long to warm up. I had this slight dread of freezing temperatures and having to huddle together to get warm and I really did not fancy huddling together with my friend and his black curly beard but thankfully this was not necessary. It was surprisingly warm. Quite often when camping I wake up in the night a little cold, but this time I did not feel cold at all. The next few days were amazing as we got used to the freezing conditions. I would certainly camp in the snow again.
