We erected our tent and decided to have a barbeque washed down with a bottle or two of cheap French plonk, but by this time it was getting quite dark. Suddenly we noticed that all the French campers had disappeared into their tents. Now this was quite unusually for a French camp site in a warm summers evening in the South of France, but we soon discovered why. First of all we heard a low frequency buzzing that seemed to be coming from an adjacent field. The sound gradually got louder and then we saw what appeared to be a cloud moving towards us. Fascinated we stood and watched this approaching swarm for a few seconds before panic set in.
We dived into the tent and zipped up the door, but there were still things we needed in the car, and had to venture out for quick sorties to grab various essentials whilst frantically waving our arms about to ward off these horrendous flying creatures. What were they? To this day we have not been able to identify them. They did not appear to have a sting but were about eight centimetres long and really looked like flying dragons. They seemed far too fat for dragonfly, but in retrospect they were probably of a related species. They got everywhere. Even after we arrived back home we found some dead carcasses under the car seats, defineitley one of our more eventful camping holidays.
