The National football team of Spain is called La Roja. They were last defeated by Romania in 2006 after which they have managed to remain undefeated for 31 matches. They have won the 2008 UEFA European Championship & have emerged as the European /champions second time in a row. In the first time in history, Spain attained the number one position in FIFA world ranking. The first domestic organization for football in Spain was created in 1909 & their football organization was called the royal Spanish football federation also referred to as RFEF in Spanish. Their first division league called the "La Liga" which means "The League" in Spanish was then set up in 1928. in 1920 Spanish team acquired the international status for the first time as they entered the Olympics. They had a good performance and managed to grab a silver medal. After this they played a number of matches including a world cup & improved their performance at a steady pace.

In 1982 Spain also hosted the FIFA World Cup & there were 24 teams in all. The group to which Spain belonged included Northern Ireland, Honduras & Yugoslavia. Since there was too much pressure on Spain being the host team, they had to struggle through their group. It was victorious over Yugoslavia, managed a draw with Honduras, but was defeated by Northern Ireland. However they managed it to make it to round two where they had to compete with England & West Germany. But disappointingly, Spain did not make it further. Similarly Spain was even knocked out of the 2002 World Cup. The Spanish team was successful at the Euro 2008 and the same team was asked to represent Spain in the friendly match against Denmark in latter part of 2008. Spain can now boast of one of the best soccer teams in the world & even the richest club. Due to recession things are changing gradually with stagnation coming into the clubs. This season the number of attendees at the stadiums in Spain has fallen drastically. This has become an issue of concern. The Barcelona football ticket prices have already been cut. So the team needs to be cautious in the coming future as it may get difficult to attract best players if the premium wages demanded by them can not be met.
