Football is a popular sport enjoyed by residents of Spain. A professional soccer league known as the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (Professional Football League) or La Liga (The League) has gained a wide following among Spanish citizens. Various football clubs are members of La Liga. The most successful of these football clubs is the Real Madrid Football Club.

The Real Madrid Football Team calls the Spanish capitol of Madrid its home. Real Madrid has enjoyed many successful seasons in La Liga over the years. Real Madrid has won a total of thirty-one La Liga titles, more than another other team that is a member of La Liga. Other honours can be proudly claimed by the Real Madrid Football Club such as seventeen Spanish Cups. Five of the nine cups were held consecutively, giving Real Madrid quite a monopoly in the competition for many years. The club also earned two UEFA (Union of European Football Association) Cups. Real Madrid also holds the record for the most European Cup victories, having claimed nine. The Real Madrid Football team is the richest team in La Liga. Estimates of the club's net worth vary but many believe their income for 2008 was approximately 351 million Euros.

The Real Madrid Football Clubs was formed in 1902. It began its run with much success, seeing changes over the decades. However, the team continued to remain in La Liga. The teams calls Madrid's Santiago Bernaeu football stadium its home base. The team has been playing their home games here for over sixty years since 1947. The stadium provides seating for 80,354 spectators. The previous stadium had been deemed insufficient to meet the needs of the football team.

In 1943, President Santiago Bernaeu called for the construction of a new stadium to house the Real Madrid Football Club. This makes the number of Real Madrid tickets available for games quite large. Many of the football tickets are held by season ticket holder. The Real Madrid Football Club's biggest rival is the Football club Barcelona. Competitions between these two largest soccer clubs are quite a big deal in the world of Spanish Football.
