By our very natures, humans have an innate interest towards things that are violent and sexual. From the dawn of time, societies have set up tenets based upon what they thought was “too violent” or “too sexual.” Obviously, these standards are dynamic and have changed a lot, especially in the past 60 years or so where mass communication via television, radio, and internet has risen to prominence, due to its potential for entertainment, business and affordability to your average Joes-and-Janes.
I’m going to make a leap now, so bear with me. I’ll come back to the idea of changing standards later, I promise! J In the 50s and 60s, the sport of boxing saw its heyday. Young boys were inspired by such greats as Jack Dempsey, Sugar Ray Leonard, and of course Mohammed Ali. However, in this new millennium, boxing has fallen out of prominence and its heir seems to be mixed martial arts as the ‘violent’ spectator sport of choice.
I believe that this has to do with the changing standards for violence on television. After watching both a boxing match and an MMA match, it’s plain to see that MMA is much more violent. In the 50s and 60s, mixed martial arts would have never been televised, while boxing was, because boxers wear gloves, follow strict guidelines for fighting, and aren’t allowed to deliver blows using their legs… which are much more powerful than the arms. The guys in MMA get beaten up pretty badly! But since our human nature draws us to the violent side of life, MMA gets televised and has become quite popular… so popular that they have clothing companies that specifically sell MMA-styled shirts, hats, and the like. I equate this trend in MMA Clothing to be no different than apparel for any other sport. We humans (especially here in America) rely on our clothing to reflect who we are… You can often tell what city a person is from, what their favorite band is, who their favorite sports player is, and even get an idea of their sense of humor sometimes, just by looking at how they choose to dress. Basketball fans buy their favorite team’s jersey. Baseball fans buy their team’s hat. So it just seems to make sense that MMA fans would buy MMA-related garb.
