In planning your camping trip, ask your kids where they want to go. If they are too young to decide on this and it’s up to you to choose a location, it is best to pick a nearby campground to keep the travel short since kids don’t have much patience for long car trips.
Ask your kids what kinds of activities they want to do. Always consider their age and interests to make sure you choose appropriate activities. Some of the things you can do when camping include short hikes on nature trails, fishing and evening or flashlight walks. Make sure to have a plan B of camping activities so you have something else to do if it rains or they don’t like one activity.
It would also be a good idea to involve your kids in planning the meals and shopping for food. Let them help out in preparing and packing camping supplies and equipment by assigning them age-appropriate tasks. Make sure to list down all the necessary things to bring on your camping trip and double check that you do have them packed and in your car before you head out.
Aside from the tent and sleeping bags, some of the essentials include several extra sets of clothes, extra pair of shoes, rain gear, first aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellant, flashlights, toys and materials for games and activities, ample food and lots of drinking water. Don’t forget the special evening snacks, their favorite pillow or blanket to make them feel secure, and glow sticks to help ease any nighttime fears.
If this is going to be your kids’ first time camping, why not camp out in your backyard first? Backyard camping is the perfect time to teach your kids about the basics of camping from pitching a camping tent, safety and respecting the environment. Let them experience outdoor cooking, sitting around a bonfire toasting marshmallows and sleeping under the stars. All of these will give them a feel of what a camping trip would be like and will help build up their excitement.
Your camping trip will certainly create memories to cherish for a lifetime so make sure to capture them. Bring your camera and/or camcorders and plenty of extra batteries and tapes. Make sure you have enough memory in your digital camera. With proper planning, your kids will have an enjoyable experience that they will fondly remember when they are all grown up.
