Online gaming is not just a technology but it could be described as a mechanism for connecting players together rather than simply a particular pattern of game play or genre. Online games are played over some form of computer network. Today, such games are typically played on the Internet. The world of online gaming actually started about 1969, but many people think that it started with Doom and Warcraft in 1994-1995. It actually started way before this; a game called Circa was written by Rick Blomme way back in 1969 which was a two-player version of MIT’s famous Spacewar (originally written for the PLATO service). PLATO was a groundbreaking time- sharing system that was busily finding new ways to use computers as a tool for education.

In the 1980s, simple multiplayer text-based games like MUDs were being played on BBS using modems. Dungeons & Dragons, chess, scrabble clones, and other board games, were also available. There are many different kinds of online games available on the net, including puzzle games, adventure games and action games along with a wide range of others. There are numerous advantages presented to users which play online games. Playing online computer games is fun. Games are now one of the most popular and fast growing part of the lesuire and internet based industries. This has resulted in a rapid development of the entertainment media in this period. More and more computer games started to be developed and online gaming developers soon became very profitable businesses.

One can play these games online by paying a monthly fee to the website. These websites also get good advertising revenues through on site sponsors. On of the major disadvantages of playing online games is that it can become addictive. Playing video and internet games on a regular basis can isolate a person from human companionships, distort his sense of reality, shorten his sight, damage his back and basically mess up his life. Just beware, most of the online games available today are addictive and too much playing leads to health problems.
