Online gaming has exploded recently with many different websites to sign up for, all offering easy access for everyone. It was not always available, though, so when did it start? When did online gaming become the new tradition and what new games have we been blessed with because of it? Is playing online games better than playing the traditional board games we all grew up with, or is it a dangerous pathway to gambling and addiction? All will be revealed...

Online gaming started over twenty five years ago with games like Mega Wars I, Islands of Kesmai, Aradath, and Air warrior. Today, there are more popular online games like Ultima Online, Everquest, Final Fantasy xi, and World of Warcraft, which seem to have taken over. These more recent games are called MMO’S or Massively Multiplayer Online games. These games usually cost a subscription fee to play and are not only playable on the computer but the fun can be transferred to other gaming systems such as the Playstation, Xbox, or the Sega.

The new technology that has been developed in the time between Mega Wars I and the World of Warcraft has allowed more people to have access to online games, meaning users can literally play with millions of people all over the world. Having games online is an advantage because you don’t have to take the time to set up the boards and pieces - it is right there and ready to go. You can still play with the whole family. Even if you don’t live in the same house, you can still play with each other online.

On the flipside, online games can become very addictive and can put a strain on work, relationships, and parenting. Games like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI have addictive qualities that the developers anticipate may cause problems so they even put a warning in the beginning of the game! Not only is it addictive but it makes having a gambling addiction more convenient.

To be on the safe side, and to avoid addiction, you can play more the more traditional board games like monopoly, arcade games like collapse or block buster, puzzle games, shooting games and many more.

Not all online games are MMO’S and there are still traditional games online that you can play. On websites like Pogo, Mecca Games, Shockwave, and Yahoo games. They have simply taken the traditional games we all know and love, and made them more convenient to play.
