Steve W.'s autobiography Steve's Story, from Publish America (www.publishamerica.com) is written as a conversation with a friend who needs advice on life in general. Steve tells his story of alcoholism, strife and redemption as if the reader is in the room with him, listening intently. His story, which tracks his turbulent journey through failed jobs, failed relationships - but a successful fight for sobriety - resonates with anyone who has ever wondered "How did I get here?"
Admittedly having a normal childhood, Steve wrote of the experiences he felt led to the development of his personality, with candor and humor. He confessed to having parts of his life that he had no memory of, whether because of some trauma he did not want to remember, because nothing interesting happened at that moment in time. He began with his birth, his adoption and the story he made up about his birth parents.
"I have always recollected to my friends as I grew up that my biological parents were high school students who were messing around one weekend and then found out they were pregnant," Steve said. "At some point in my life, I mentioned to Mom, or asked her a question in more detail about my birth parents and what year in high school they were in; she looked at me like I didn't know what I was talking about. She said that certainly was not the case and how had I ever come up with that tale."
This was not, Steve admitted, the first or last time he embellished a story. Steve went through all the normal teenage angst: girls, drinking, trying to fit in.
Steve attended USC, doing what all normal college kids do, goofing off, drinking and experimenting with drugs; everything except for studying and going to class. He finished his college career at University of Idaho and graduated with a telecommunications degree. He was ready to make his mark on the world.
"I was now ready to get on with life and start doing what any graduate does: Find a career job and be successful! Easy. No problem," said Steve.
Steve soon found that his prospects were not as numerous as he had expected and he had to take a job to make ends meet. During this time, he got reacquainted with a girl from high school and asked her to marry him. He called off the engagement on the advice of his mother who thought they were too young. A series of girlfriends, casual sex, phone sex and one night stands ensued.
Steve found a good job that he was able to stick with and met a young woman named Martha. Steve and Martha got married and began their life together with a series of mishaps that made Steve feel inadequate. What started out as a small money problem, soon amounted to a big debt and many lies.
Steve began drinking, lying and avoiding more and more. Finally, his marriage was over. After being arrested for drunk driving, filing for bankruptcy and being fired for printing up fake money, Steve decided to start over again.
Steve was able to find a new job, which he intended to make into a new career. He again went through a series of apartments, roommates and girlfriends. Alcohol was always a present and very large part of his life. Again in financial crisis, drinking, smoking and doing drugs, he finally came to the realization that something had to change. Steve's girlfriend, Julie, convinced him to enter a drug and alcohol treatment program. He cleaned himself up and began life anew once again, this time, hopefully, for good.
"If someone thinks maybe their life is as out of control as mine was and makes a positive change because of reading this then I have made a difference," said Steve.
