A woman at this stage is normally confined to a fixed circle of intimate friends, although she and her husband may have common friends. As for males, they do not care much about emotional closeness with male friends since they get together just to have fun or socialize.
There are some factors that can affect your social skill in middle to late adulthood. Here are some factors that could negatively affect you and the corresponding tips to address such factors.
1. Physical changes. Often, people at middle age face a transition. Sometimes it is called mid-life crisis. The answer to this is simply acceptance. We all grow old, so why not grow old gracefully? Exercise and diet at this stage is mandatory.
2. Failed marriage or relationship. This affects women more than men. Just give time for healing and accept the end of your relationship. Friends are helpful to be around with at this time. Learn the art of moving on. Joining social groups involved in meaningful projects may also help.
3. Physical Disabilities. Simple disabilities such as weakened or poor vision, and poor hearing, may affect your social life. People who have this shy away from big gatherings. One solution to this type of problem is to find a group that understands your situation. Support groups are recommended for those with other physical disabilities as well. It is also recommended that you take corrective measures, like hearing aids.
4. Learning Disabilities. An adult with a learning problem is more likely to be deprived of success. If the other person does not know your problem then he will miss out on a lot. In this case, the other person must be informed of the difficulty. There are professional groups and professionals in this field who could help you in this area. A couple of sessions can help you cope with your learning disabilities.
5. Have gone through problems in life. You may have committed things you now regret. If you have been through this type of situation there is a solution for you. First of all, you must be willing to undergo counseling or therapy to help you work out the issues of resentment, and anger, and to improve or develop your social relationships with the people around you whom you may have hurt in the process.
People who encountered difficulties out of their control must be able to get back to normal - learn to care for your health, become relaxed and calm down. There are many agencies, religious and other groups that could help you rebound from stressful events you have gone through.
No matter where you have been and what have you have gone through in your younger years (which may have somehow hurt you), remember that it is never too late to recover. If you are willing to work at it, regaining your grasp of adult social skill is not impossible. Just take it one step at a time and your adult social skill will definitely improve eventually.
