1. Package your CD so that it will be retailer friendly. Don't skimp because you don't want to sell a product. Keep your customers happy.
2. Stick spine stickers to your CDs, just like the major labels do. A spine sticker is the strip of barcode/catalog info that comes on the top of a CD box.
3. Place bar codes on your CD.
4. Make sure the packaging fits in standard-size CD holders and displays.
5. Try and get some radio airplay. This is high any musician's list. They really know how to promote your CD. But look for radio stations that aren't strictly Billboard Top 50 and 100 players. I am sure there are stations in your area that except music from independent artists.
6. Think about distribution. Distribution used to be a pain but it is a necessity. Take advantage of all the musician resources on the web especially the ones that help sell CD's made by independents like you.
7. Use a reputable company to make your CD's. As I said a million times before, don't skimp in this area, ever! You want to release a great product not something that falls apart at the touch of the hand. You want long-lasting, high quality stuff.
8. Lastly, make as many as you can afford. Before artists were worried about how many units to produce but with the Internet and all the sites you can use, there is no need to worry. There are more places to sell CDs besides your show so don't under produce.
Now that you know how to promote your CD by creating it professionally, you just need to come up with some stellar music promotional ideas. This way you can get people to where your CD is sold and start making some profits. Do not forget to take full advantage of all musician resources out there and most of all good luck with your CD promotion!
