Due to the financial crisis, the export of leather has not been doing very well this year. The export value has decreased for the first time over the last 10 years. Some Chinese tanneries have to cut cost or scale down their production in order to get through the crisis, waiting for a comeback of international market demand very soon. Pig leather industry is no exception. The production clusters have been shrinking and it is not hard to find some drums having stopped running for a while now.

Based on the analysis of our management team, we find some problems of the industry: 1.) Excess capacity of certain kind of pig leather; 2. ) Frequent foreign trade frictions of the industry; 3.) Product mix is too simple. Currently, some tanneries just produce one or two types of pig lining. They never think of upgrading their technology and producing value-added leather, such as vegetable-tanned leather.
