No one likes to be the victim of an accident. If you are an accident victim, though, one of the things that you want is compensation. You don't want to be injured and then get nothing for the trouble that you went through and the pain and suffering that you had to endure. Unfortunately, there are a lot of other issues that come into play, and one of them is whether you were careless enough to cause your own 'accident' or the accident that someone else was involved in. In other words, if your desk and work area is so messy that you slipped on a problem that you created and got hurt, it's hard to get compensation for that - especially if your boss told you to clean up your mess and you didn't. It was your own negligence in that case, and that can be a serious pitfall to getting any kind of compensation. In order to avoid that, and avoid most accidents as well, there are some things that you can do.

First, keep your work area clean, and take good care of any of the other areas that you frequent. Even if it's not your job to mop up spilled coffee or anything like that, you should be willing to do it if there isn't a designated person for that or if that person is on vacation, busy with a legitimate task, or otherwise unable to handle it. If you really won't or can't do it, someone in authority should be notified so that it can be taken care of. That goes for spills, problems with any of the restroom facilities, burned-out light bulbs, water or other liquid puddles, items on the stairs or in the hallways that could cause a tripping and falling hazard, and any blatantly dangerous behaviour that you see other employees engaging in. You don't have to be a whiner and a tattle tale, but it is important to keep the work environment safe and secure. That's hard to do when there's a lot of horseplay going on.

You can also help to avoid accidents by being kind to other people so they don't set you up for a problem that isn't really an 'accident.' Most people won't do this kind of thing but there are always some people who will, and if you work with any of them keep that in mind. You should treat others with respect, don't damage their property or the company's property, and make sure that your area is kept clean. If you do these things and try to be a good employee, you'll have a better chance to avoid any accidents or other problems that you would typically see at work.
