Safety is not solely about protective gear. Proper training and practice also aid in a rider's understanding of their machine and the road. Training through your state or an independent source is recommended. This not only teaches you proper techniques and prepares you for many potential hazards, but it can also lead to a reduction in your motorbike insurance premiums. Many organizations offer refresher courses as well, for the seasoned biker. Proper licensing, protective gear, required motorbike insurance, and training are essential.

Outside of these areas, all riders should understand and look for possible threats from other motorists. Not all motor vehicle operators are motorbike enthusiasts. Many people do not understand or adhere to safety regulations concerning distance, speed, cell phones or intoxication. Always be aware of your fellow motorists. Racing, showboating, as well as weaving through traffic or disregarding lane structures, put you and everyone around you in harms way. Remember to share the road, and make decisions to reduce risk. You cannot control or always predict the movements of the drivers around you, but you can control your own risky behavior.

It is also important to never operate your bike under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Your risk of bodily injury is much greater while operating a motorbike intoxicated. This is not only because of your inhibited reaction time, but also because you are exposed. Without the added safety of a full vehicle, a minor accident could prove critical or fatal. Through preparation, education, and awareness, you can avoid such issues, and enjoy the call of the open road.
