Search engine optimisation is a game of two halves, onsite optimisation involving the manipulation of meta data, and link building through forging relationships with quality content. Today we’ll focus on the latter. Link building is essential to improve your rankings in Google and other search engine results pages. In the eyes of the almighty Google, links are seen as votes of confidence for your site, so the more votes of confidence, the better your site appears to be. Not only this but links also provide surfers with alternative paths to finding your site so the more you have the more ways people may stumble across you.

So how are these all important links built? Well, there are many black hat techniques employed in order to greatly increase the amount of back links to your web site, however black hat techniques are likely to get you sandboxed by Google, which will stop you appearing in their rankings which in turn is bound to be extremely detrimental to your business. In addition it’s worth noting that Google is less interested in the quantity of links pointing to your site and more interesting in the quality of links. So, in order to build links you have to put yourself in the position of the other sites that may be interested in linking to yours. Sites are likely to link to content which is relevant to theirs, original and adds richness to their existing material.

Start out by researching sites that are related to your industry or sector. Of course it is unlikely that direct competitors would link to you so take some time exploring prospective sites to get a sense of their tone and business direction. For example, if your site sells environmentally friendly furniture a site offering the same or even similar service will not want to promote yours by linking to it. However a blog that is concerned with the environment, lowering carbon footprints and living a greener lifestyle is certain to be interested in linking to your site, especially if you provide them with some quality content. This could be in the form of a well-written article on the eco-benefits of furnishing your house with furniture that is made from sustainable sources.

Link building is all about building relationships so when you approach prospective online partners be sure to open up a dialogue, inform them that you want an on going, mutually beneficial exchange where quality content is the collateral for quality links.
