You only have a couple of days to get water damage cleaned up before you start having serious trouble from mold and other problems associated with water damage in your home or business. But following a few quick guidelines can save you from choosing the wrong contractor.

Time is critical once water has invaded your home or business, but choosing the wrong contractor can cause just as much damage to your home as the water damage.

Follow these steps and you will reduce the chances of getting the wrong contractor.

The first step is to make sure that they carry a certification from a recognized certification organization. This in itself will greatly reduce the odds that you will get contracted with a rogue contractor out to prey on unsuspecting customers. The certification process is pretty stringent and the company has guidelines and protocols to follow to keep their certification in the water damage restoration business.

You can go to the certification organizations website to validate the companies credentials. These are usually fairly easy to check on.

The second is to validate that the contractor carries all of the necessary insurance required by local, state or federal agencies. Contact information to the insurance provider is on the certificate of insurance. This can be checked on with one quick phone call.

Next is to ask the contractor if he has up to date equipment so that the process is the most advanced for the current times. Like science, equipment and processes are continuously updated as more and improved methods and information are available to the contractors.

Next is to ask the contractor if the service personnel will be in uniform. This may seem like nit picking but there are some valid reasons for this. A company that uses uniforms are usually more professional and it shows with the uniforms. It is also a safety precaution so that you know who is supposed to have access to your property at all times.

The next question is if employees have had background and drug testing. If they have not gone through this process, the contractors insurance may not amount to much if something happens to someone or something while on your job.

Finally getting to references, This is the last step for a quick check on a contractor. Ask for 5 references and call them. It will only take a few minuets to verify their work and will give you a first hand observation from a third party of how the contractor handles the company.
