However, there are those that think the hammer is actually a secondary tool in this process, rather than the primary one. The right tool to use for this purpose is a question debated by many who do this kind of work. Some feel the drywall hammer is the easiest to use and will be more versatile on the job. Others disagree and say that using a drywall screwdriver to attach the drywall is the preferable route. The question, of course, is nail versus screw, but some feel that the ease of use of the tool is part of the deciding factor. For many it is the simple fact that many are more comfortable hammering then using a screw gun made especially for use with drywall.
The reason that you use a special hammer for putting up drywall is because it has a rounded head. This means that when the nails are stuck with the hammer they will wind up slightly under the surface of the drywall. This allows for a stronger connection to the wooden struts of the frame being made without chancing any damage to the paper that covers the drywall sheets. The force of the hammer does make a little indent but there is no problem with that since it will be covered over with joint compound when the cracks between the sheets are done. The walls should have the nails spaced every eight inches while the ceilings need them to be every seven inches apart. There are many other tools you will require when building your addition, but the drywall hammer will prove to be one of the most valuable, and also one that you will find is very easy to use.
