Cheap Area Rugs are plentiful on today’s market and we see examples of them everywhere. Some are imports with rich textures and beautiful designs inlaid while others are made domestically and are rather plain but durable. Everyone knows about these rugs but not many people understand the long history that all types of rugs have and that many of them even predate out modern world.

The earliest known representation of a cheap area rug goes so far back in history that the name of the country has changed. The earliest example had the terracotta seal and went all the way back to Sumer—a land presently known as Iraq. The piece of cloth had a representation of two figures sitting cross-legged on it and the technique that was used can still be found in the cheap area rugs of today some 25 centuries after the discovery of this artifact.

As you might be able to imagine, gathering the history of these rugs has not been easy and while there are many collections today like the Accent Area Rugs from 828 Collections that can mimic the looks of those pieces of history, not much was known about them until after 1949 when a Russian archaeologist uncovered some burial mounds in the infamous area called Siberia.

It appears that a burial barrow, which is like a tomb, was uncovered some an undisclosed reason and left open. It is possible that the barrow had been left open in the summer months waiting for the burial of a chieftain of a neighbouring tribe. Although why the barrow was left open will always be left up to conjecture, what is certain is that melting ice and snow ran into the barrow and when the harsh Siberian Winter set back in, the materials that had been put inside in anticipation of the ceremony froze into a solid block of ice. Of the many interesting artifacts that preserved were a series of cloths and some examples of what can be termed the early forefathers of today’s cheap area rugs.

Although there were many things discovered that caught the attention of scientists and historians, the major find that dated back as far as 2500 years was what’s been termed as the Pazyryk Carpet. This example of one of the earliest cheap area rugs is still on display at a museum in Russia and has been the subject of conjecture ever since it was first discovered.
