If you look at the design of most bathrooms it is easy to see that it is a playground for disaster. With electrical devices, running water, and slippery obstacles almost covering every inch of the average bathroom.
Here we will attempt to identify these sources for danger and death and find simple ways to reduce or completely eliminate the risk.
The first and most dangerous is the bath tub or shower. This is the most dangerous for several reasons, It is always wet when someone is getting in or out. Most are slippery and smooth because of the surface, soaps, conditioners and humans moving around in them with all of these conditions present at the same time.
Stepping into and out of a bath tub is a risk because of the above mentioned circumstances plus having to step over the side of the tub onto a floor that does not have carpet most of the time, this can make you lose your balance and slip or just plain slip. I am sure you have slipped at least once getting in or out of a bath tub before. I know I have many times.
There are some simple cures to these problems. The first thing to do is make sure the bathroom is organized. Keep the most used products at waist level if possible, Next is to make sure all electrical grooming tools like hair dryers are put up and unplugged when not in use, this will stop an accidental push into any water in the bathroom, like a sink or bath tub while doing something else.
Then I would find one of the many products on the market to secure bathroom rugs to keep them from slipping or curling or rolling when stepped on. These products are not expensive and can save a broken hip or worse with the elderly.
I would then find some no slip applications that has its own adhesive to put in the shower or bath tub. The do not cost a lot either and can be purchased just about anywhere.
The next recommendation really applies to the elderly. Placing hand rails or grab bars to assist is getting in or out of the shower or bath.
If you follow these simple rules you can save you and your family a lot of grief.
The cost is cheap and the rewards could be life saving.
