Over the last few weeks there has been a rapid rise in the rate of garden crime. Police have issued urgent warnings in several regions. Typically thieves are targeting bicycles, barbeque equipment, garden furniture, garden tools and power tools. In some cases the victims of this crime wave do not have adequate insurance. It is certainly a good move to check with your insurance policy covers items in your garden. If some of these items are particularly valuable it might be necessary to insure them specifically.

It is thought that there is a relationship between the lighter evenings and the increased amount of garden crime. Thieves can stroll be gardens and discover what is left out in the open. They can then return a little later once the family have retired to bed for the night and help themselves to the items they identified previously. Typically there is over £1000 worth of items that are kept openly in the garden, so thefts of this nature can be very lucrative. Also it has never before been easier to sell stolen items through such outlets as car boot sales and online auction sites.

One way of ensuring that you are safe from this crime is to obtain a garden shed that is sufficiently large to store the items that you would otherwise just store in the open. These items should be kept in the shed and the shed should be kept properly secure with a good quality padlock. Thieves who steal from gardens tend to be opportunistic burglars, and are likely to be deterred by a shed and good quality padlock. Installation of a security light is also an excellent deterrent for this type of criminal.

It might seem to be somewhat of an imposition to insist that all your valuable garden items are stored in your shed overnight, but even if it is a little tedious putting them all away, it is far better than having them stolen and all that this entails subsequently. Being burgled, even from just your garden, is an extremely unpleasant experience, and if it can be avoided by using a shed, it is a price worth paying.
