We find garden sheds so useful and store so many things inside then that thieves have started to target them.
In a recent case in Norfolk someone broke into two garden sheds in adjacent gardens. From one shed they helped themselves to a lawn trimmer and from the other they removed a petrol generator and a chain saw. The total value for these items is about £500.

The police have advised everyone in the locality to ensure that they keep their sheds locked, preferably with a good secure padlock. As an added precaution they have been advised to record the serial numbers of any particularly valuable items that they keep in their sheds. The police have also advised people to have their vehicle registration number engraved on these items which will help the police identify their proper owners or even painting them with bright colours. In other areas police are also issuing similar warnings.

In most cases any items stored in your garden shed are covered by your house insurance. This is good news for the shed owner but not such good news for the insurance companies. As people are finding their sheds so useful, a greater number of expensive items are stored in them. On average a garden shed contains £1,040 worth of goods including children's toys, garden furniture, and tools. Bicycles are targeted highly and in all garden thefts over half result in a bicycle being stolen.

Crime levels are expected to rise in line with unemployment, so it is advisable for all owners of garden sheds to get up to date with their security arrangements. By taking the police advice quoted above and possibly taking a few additional precautions such as installing a security light they should ensure that that do not become victims of garden crime.

A properly locked garden shed is an extremely useful means of protecting our property. You wouldn't dream of leaving your house unlocked, so you should apply the same standard to your shed.
