The way that a regular bulb works is that it you have electricity go through a little metal piece. There is resistance in this metal and eventually it gets hot. It actually gets red hot and you have light that is formed.
Halogen is different because what you're going to have is a chemical reaction, rather than heating up a piece of metal. The chemical reaction creates light, but it also creates heat. Basically you have a tungsten metal piece in the bulb and electricity will run through that. The tungsten will burn white. The only way it can burn is if there is an inert gas around it. There is a secondary reaction because when the tungsten burns, it creates a gas that reacts with the halogen gas and you get more inert gas. And it is the inert gas that allows the tungsten to burn.
