The window air conditioner is arguably the most popular air conditioner of them all. It is more used than split or central air conditioners and this is because it has its own unique advantages.

This trend is not encountered in peoples' homes only, but also commercially. For cooling and heating jobs, the window air conditioner is the most widespread. There are also a number of reasons why all these happen, and they are closely connected to the advantages the window air conditioner has to offer.

First of all, it can fit into your window, while leaving most of its body outside the room. This has the great advantage of clearing up a lot of your room's space, and if you are like me, you like having as much space as possible in your apartment or house.

A major downside to the window air conditioner though is the noise that it produces. But this is a problem for all types of air conditioner units, and in fact, if you want to have one, you have to get used to this idea.

Of course, there are units which produce more noise and units which produce less noise. That's why it's recommendable that you check the sound levels when you purchase an air conditioner. The noise level is measured in decibels, and the bigger the number of decibels one particular unit produces, the louder it is.

You also need to bear in mind that the sound pressure increases by a factor of 10 for every 10-decibel increase. So, if we are talking about 50 decibels then it is actually 10 times louder than 40 decibels and 100 times louder than 30 decibels. So don't be fooled by thinking that 60 decibels would hardly make any more noise than 50, because it will actually make a lot more noise.

And to install an air conditioner doesn't come cheap either. Although this is known fact, many of us just plug in the device and forget about any sort of maintenance, until our window air conditioner stops providing the service we have gotten used to.

Neglecting your air conditioner's maintenance would not only mean that the efficiency of your unit will drop but you might also have to go deep in your pocket for repair costs. However, if you just follow a few proper maintenance guidelines provided in the instruction manual, you can avoid a lot of problems.

And do have the patience to read the entire manual. It will give you maintenance tips which could save you a lot of trouble in the future. After all, if you decide to invest in an air conditioner unit, you might just as well to keep an eye on its proper functioning. You don't want, later on, to spend more money on repairs than you did on the unit itself.

A weekly maintenance check-up could make all the difference. It will not take you that long either, you will just have to check the different components of the unit and see if they function properly. Do that, and your window air conditioner might live longer.
