No matter how much one may hear about the benefits of Ayurveda practices, it should not outweigh the need to understand how these practice works or provide an alternative solution to good health for the human body.

Ayurveda is an alternative science that originated from India around 5,000 – 10,000 years ago as a form of medicinal and health science. Ayurveda is literally translated as "the science or knowledge of life" and is considered to be the traditional holistic medical system of India. Although it has been practiced as a comprehensive health care and medicinal system with eight basic branches, extending the practice even to gynecology and pediatrics, it lately gained popularity in the Western world, including the United States, as an alternative health and wellness practice.

The science and knowledge of Ayurveda is believed by Indians to be of divine origin which was communicated to the sages and saints of India who received its ancient wisdom of holistic healing and religious devotion through deep meditation. This Ayurvedic knowledge was then passed down orally through generations and then written down in the Vedas, which like the Red Sea Scrolls is to Christianity, are the sacred texts of India and is believed to be one of the oldest writings in the world.

The basic science of Ayurveda theorizes that the spirit, mind and body are intimately connected and this belief is starting to gain popularity beyond Southeast Asia, especially with the growing awareness regarding alternative methods to health and wellness. It is basically focused on the idea that separating the body from the mind and spirit cause physical imbalance that cause diseases and illnesses.

Ayurveda focuses on integrating the spirit, mind and body which it claims is the first step to healing and symptoms of diseases is the body’s way of communicating that the body, mind and spirit is in a state of disharmony.
With this understanding of the nature of diseases, Ayurveda's approach to healing is to reestablish harmony between environment and self, as well as create an optimal environment for health.

Generally, Ayurveda practices are also beneficial in providing for what regular or daily diet may not provide and since it is a holistic science for health and wellness, it also promotes a healthy lifestyle through proper food consumption and a balanced approach to healthy living.

Essentially, Ayurda practices also promote herbal supplements that are meant to complement a diet, not as a substitute for it, as what many believe to be the case. Still caution should be observed, especially in introducing Ayruvedic herbal remedies or supplements, since there may be some herbal remedies and concoctions that may not be suited to one’s physical make-up or body chemistry. It is also of paramount concern to study and research Ayurveda before totally immersing one’s self in the science, since it is important to know what one is getting involved in.

Try to seek advice from a nutritionist, dietitian or your physician as to what your body needs and does not need to have, since they may be able to help you establish what you need supplemented or fortified, or even could look into the Ayurvedic practice if your body is suited or can carry on with the physical and dietary approaches and how your body could respond to it.

Lastly, take note that anything good taken in excess can end up to negative results so it is still important to take good note in weighing the benefits of Ayurveda practices and make sure that it will all work to your advantage.
