Sleep is one of the most mysterious phenomena we know. Throughout the ages, wise men, religious people, scientists, psychologists and torturers have probed the mysteries of sleep. Many theories regarding it have been propounded and many have been discounted. The one fact of which we are certain is that without sleep we will die.

Sleep is not a single phenomenon; there are many different kinds of sleep that fall into two major patterns. These are known as REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and NREM (Non Rapid Eye Movement). NREM has a number of subclasses and during a normal sleep pattern we pass through each of these subclasses before finally reaching a state of REM. After reaching REM we will again enter another cycle of NREM sleep and throughout the night these cycles are repeated. Often scientists examine these sleep patterns by looking at the electrical signals that are generated by our brains.

Despite us all needing a good nights sleep, there is a large variation regarding the quantity of sleep required by individuals. Additionally we need more sleep at some stages of our life than at others. Babies need huge amounts of sleep, perhaps eighteen hours a day, whilst old people need relatively little. It also seems that adolescents are only able to sleep during daylight hours, preferring to be awake at night-time. One thing is certain, and that is if we don't get enough sleep, then we will suffer both mentally and physically.

In order to achieve a full night of sleep it is very important that we are not distracted or disturbed by discomforts. The mattresses on which we sleep is a major factor in achieving a restful night as, by providing the correct level of comfort and support, we are able to enter and leave each necessary sleep phase. Of course we should take other steps too to ensure that the time spent on our quality mattresses is not wasted in restlessness. We should do what we can to exclude extraneous light and sound and ensure that we have an adequate supply of fresh air but not be in a draft.
