We have all seen celebrities like Heidi Klum who, after her third pregnancy was back in bikinis and on the runway within a few weeks. Is that kind of weight loss after pregnancy even possible for ordinary women? And just how fast is safe?

The truth is that whether you are a runway model or not, you shouldn’t be in a huge rush to lose weight after having a baby. Just consider what your body has been through in the past 9 months. It needs a break, a chance to recover and time to replenish the vitamins and minerals that the baby needed. That means a diet immediately after giving birth is NOT a good idea, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be smart about what you eat.

Any after pregnancy diet needs to be very carefully planned, particularly if you are breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about any drastic changes you want to make. In general, you shouldn’t think about losing weight until after your 6 week checkup, though you can certainly eat well during those 6 weeks. Once the doctor has given the ok for exercise, you can start looking at getting rid of some of that baby weight!

If you have eaten well during pregnancy and stayed fit, chances are you will bounce back fairly quickly, particularly if it is your first baby. Breastfeeding can also help new mothers lose weight after pregnancy faster and naturally. However, once you have recovered from the birth and have settled into motherhood, it’s time to really look at how to lose pregnancy weight and get back to your former self.

The problem with this is that most women don’t have the time to research a weight loss diet, prepare their meals and plan everything out to ensure that they aren’t getting too many calories. Your time is taken up with the new baby and you’re going to be pretty weary for those first few months. So what can you do to ensure that you actually stick to a diet?

The best way to go about this is to simply get some help! A menu plan that is already done up for you and customized to your particular needs can be a lifesaver when you are running on too little sleep and still want to get rid of that baby fat without missing out on time with your precious newborn.

Weight loss after pregnancy is definitely possible, but it is infinitely easier if you have a plan and stick to it. After all, just trying to eat less isn’t going to work when you’re a tired mama rushing to shove something down your throat before the baby needs you again!
