Three types of mesothelioma exist: pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma and periocardial mesothelioma. The most common of the three is Pleural mesothelioma which affects the lungs. The second type, peritoneal mesothelioma, affects the abdomen. Here a tumour would form causing improper functioning. The third type of mesothelioma, periocardial mesothelioma, is extremely rare and affects the heart.

All forms of mesothelioma do have in common the fact that they are fatal. Typically, once diagnosed the patient has very little time left. Some doctors may advise chemotherapy or other methods used to treat cancers. These typically, just provide the patient with a little more time to live but not much. All doctors agree that mesothelioma is a terminal illness.
