During the decades of the 1960's and 1970's, asbestos was a commonly used material in construction. The material was typically found as the main component of insulation. At the time, there was not an awareness of the dangers of asbestos. Over time, it was eventually discovered that exposure to asbestos could cause significant health problems in humans. Many people having inhaled the material were falling victim to severe health issues such as cancer and respiratory problems. Once these health risks were discovered, the British government began placing restrictions on the usage of asbestos in building materials.

Despite these regulations, asbestos related health problems continue to show up in people even long after their exposure. Many people assume that asbestos is a problem of the past. However, this is definitely false as those people who have been exposed to the substance fear possible health problems showing up later down the road.

Without a doubt, asbestos is perhaps one of the largest occupational hazards for British workers. Statistics show the annual deaths from asbestos numbered approximately 4,000. Many fear this statistic could climb in the future.

As a result, there has been an increase in the number of asbestos claims in the United Kingdom. Many fear that this deluge of cases may have disastrous repercussions for businesses. They have seen the results that have caused many American firms to go bankrupt and fear that could happen here.

There is also concern regarding an increase in the number of mesothelioma cases. An extremely rare type of cancer, mesothelioma, is fatal to those afflicted. The cancer can lie dormant for awhile and actually surface until 40 or 50 years after exposure to asbestos. This makes people exposed to asbestos concerned that they may not get compensation should this occur. Many find themselves being proactive and filing claims for any future health problems that should happen. They do not have symptoms at the time of filing their claims. Also, they fear that if they do not file an asbestos claim for compensation when the time comes they need it, the company may have folded or be unreachable.
