Different people prefer different sleeping positions, and there isn’t one particular position that is best for everyone. However, some positions offer better comfort than others, and some are more appropriate if you are experiencing pain or aching in certain areas.

Pressure against certain parts of the body, such as the jaw or the eye, can exacerbate any problems that you might be experiencing, like TMJ in the case of the jaw, whereby the joints in the mouth become strained. A lot of this pressure will come from sleeping on your side, and you won’t realise how much strain you are putting on your joints whilst you are asleep, so try to fall asleep on your back if you are experiencing these problems. Sleeping on your side can also cause problems with your neck, especially if you sleep with a few pillows piled on top of each other. This can place a lot of pressure on your neck at an angle, and may affect the blood supply to your head.

If you are suffering from back problems, then there are a wide range of beds and mattresses out there for you to choose from which should help you sleep better. You should look for a bed that is firm, but not hard, and is soft but does not sag. It sounds like something that is impossible to find – but there are products out there that work! You want to find a bed that allows the heavier parts of your body to sink in and then offer support to your back.
Usually, it is not your bed that will cause you problems, or even start to ease them, but you need to ensure that you have a good quality mattress to sleep on. There is a wide range of mattresses available on the market, so make sure you do some research before deciding which one to buy – think of the purchase as a long-term investment, as mattresses tend to last for a good few years.
