If you prefer a more natural approach to staying awake, you’ll find that there just aren’t many products out there. Most of them contain things like taurine and while many will argue that caffeine is a natural product, if you don’t want to add that to your blood stream, your options are limited.
Getting enough sleep on a regular basis will make it easier for you to stay up after you have pulled an all nighter. You will also find that a short catnap can help. If you sleep for 10-15 min. before a class, it will be far easier to stay awake for the remainder of the day. As long as you don’t sleep for more than 30 minutes, a catnap will give you the refreshing boost that you need. Any longer and you’ll tend to wake up more tired and feeling grumpy and worn out still.
Exercise is a great way to get the blood pumping and increase oxygen to the brain. Taking a quick run around the block can be a great way to wake you up. With increased oxygen in your bloodstream, you’ll also be more alert for longer. Anything that gets your heart rate up can help, so if you’re pressed for time and space, just do some quick jumping jacks or jog in place.
Other ways to stay awake include cold showers or even just splashing icy water on your face. This can cause a rush of adrenaline from the cold and will spark your alertness. If you’re in a hurry, wiping your face with a chilled cloth can work, too, particularly if you stand in front of a fan for a minute before running out the door. Any kind of fresh air will also help.
Just because you aren’t willing to chug a half dozen red bulls before you head to class doesn’t mean you can’t use other methods to stay awake.
