The first type is known as Spastic Cerebral Palsy. This form of the disease is the most common, with over eighty percent of patience suffering from this type. Spastic Cerebral Palsy is known for causing patients to have tight muscle groups, whether one or many, which will prohibit their movement. This can include, but is not limited to, difficult or jerky movements in walking, handling, or moving of the head.
The second type, known as Athetoid Cerebral Palsy, is obviously much less common, but can account for about ten percent of Cerebral Palsy patients. This type of the disease, unfortunately, is caused by damage to the areas of the brain known as the cerebellum or the basil ganglia. Because of the hindrance to these parts of the brain, coordinated movements are often not a reality for children with this type. Instead, patients of Athetoid Cerebral Palsy will struggle immensely with often pointless, involuntary actions which can interfere with such skills as speaking, eating, or grasping. Low muscle tone in patients causes lack of posture in both sitting and stand as well. Often, an increase in these movements can be seen during high levels of stress.
Finally, the third and least common type is known as Ataxic Cerebral Palsy. With this type of the disease, patients will experience very low muscle tone which causes difficulty in maintaining posture. Children with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy will also often have poor coordination as well as a poor sense of depth perception or balance. With the combination of these effects, Ataxic Cerebral Palsy patients can be quite shaky at times, and may have difficulty performing even small tasks such as holding a pencil or moving from one place to another.
Very rarely patients may have what is commonly referred to as Mixed Cerebral Palsy which is a combination of the above types. This mat cause a variety of different struggles and effects, but this mixed type of the disease is often only seen in less than ten percent of the patients.
