The Side Effects of Lexapro

The fact that Lexapro has limited side effects is mainly because it has a high selectivity of serotonin reuptake inhibition. To put it simply, the drug does what it is supposed to do, and not much more. So even if there are side effects, they are related to the drug’s serotonergic activity. In fact, recent studies and clinical research have suggested that Escitalopram group of drugs, to which Lexapro belongs, are highly effective and have fewer side effects while treating adults suffering from major depression.

Common Side Effects of Lexapro

The side effect profile of Lexapro is similar to other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs. These would include a feeling of sleepiness, nausea and gastrointestinal side effects. These are pretty common side effects and a large proportion of patients under the medication complain of these. Lexapro also exhibits sexual side effects in patients including a loss of libido, delay in ejaculation, and anorgasmia. Other less serious side effects of Lexapro are drowsiness, dizziness, sleep problems including insomnia, heartburn, dry mouth, upset stomach, weight changes, constipation, ringing in your ears, yawning.

Since these are very common side effects, there is not much to worry about during the initial stages. However, if the problems persist it is better not to neglect.

Less Common Side Effects of Lexapro

There are a few less common side effects of Lexapro as well. These would include extremely stiff muscles, high temperature, sweating, irregular or fast heartbeat, tremors, hyperactive reflexes, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, a feeling of unsteadiness, a lack of coordination, inability to concentrate, headache, problems with memory including short term amnesia, confusion, weakness, fainting, hallucinations, seizures, and difficulty in breathing.

While these are less common, these are not necessarily that serious. But it is always better to seek the opinion of your doctor. Get a check up done if the problem persists.
