Anxiety is characterized with the feeling of fear, distress, worry and apprehension. Children who have this can exhibit physical and emotional symptoms. Physical symptoms include headache and feeling sick. While emotional symptoms include nervousness, guilt and fear.
When anxiety problem is left untreated, it can turn severe and affect the development of the child's brain. It can affect the way they think about themselves, the people around them and their environment. Other complications it can cause to health include vomiting, stomach pain, weakness and shortness of breath.
In a recent research done in the United Kingdom, results show that anxiety and low self esteem on children are related to weight problems in their adult years.
The study was printed in the BMC Medicine journal. The research involved the children making note of their weight at regular times. The research presented the connection between children who are depressed have greater weight problems between the ages of 10 and 30. Another observation gathered from the study was the link between emotional health and weight was seen more in girls than boys.
This trend among children creates a vicious cycle of anxiety and depression, as more weight is put in, the more the self-esteem is lowered. Children and adults who are overweight are often ridiculed because of their weight problems which affects more their self-confidence. Through this study, parents can avoid giving their children unhealthy food when they are feeling down because it can lead to psychological dependence. An example of this is when your child gets upset about school, maybe you could treat him or her to a healthier snack rather then bring him or her to a fast food restaurant. This way, your child will be encouraged to go for healthier food selection whatever mood he or she has.
In addition, parents should know that eating habits are formed at the early stages of life. Guidance is necessary so children will know how to eat healthy as they grow old. Children imitate what they see from the adults around them. It is important that parents set good examples to their children with regard to having a healthy diet, lifestyle and exercise.
