Anxiety is considered a mental health disorder that can affect people of whatever age, even children. Unknown to many, anxiety problem is the most common type of mental health disorder occurring in children. Statistics reports that as many as 10% of young people have anxiety disorders. The study was printed in the BMC Medicine journal. The research involved the children making note of their weight at regular times. The research presented the connection between children who are depressed have greater weight problems between the ages of 10 and 30. Another observation gathered from the study was the link between emotional health and weight was seen more in girls than boys.

This trend among children creates a vicious cycle of anxiety and depression, as more weight is put in, the more the self-esteem is lowered. Children and adults who are overweight are often ridiculed because of their weight problems which affects more their self-confidence. Through this study, parents can avoid giving their children unhealthy food when they are feeling down because it can lead to psychological dependence. An example of this is when your child gets upset about school, maybe you could treat him or her to a healthier snack rather then bring him or her to a fast food restaurant. This way, your child will be encouraged to go for healthier food selection whatever mood he or she has.

In addition, parents should know that eating habits are formed at the early stages of life. Guidance is necessary so children will know how to eat healthy as they grow old. Children imitate what they see from the adults around them. It is important that parents set good examples to their children with regard to having a healthy diet, lifestyle and exercise.
