Almost all of us suffer from the occasional mid-afternoon slump, or we need to somehow find a second wind once the kids are in bed and we have work that we took home from the office, or some sort of project we wanted to finish before bed? All too often, we tend to procrastinate and put things on the back burner because we are just too tired to do one more thing that day.
Even if you are diligent about getting sufficient rest in the form of seven to eight hours of sleep a night, sometimes you may need a bit of a pick-me-up during the day. It goes without saying that whatever you use needs to be safe and effective, and should not leave you with any side effects. All too often, people rely on diet sodas and coffee to give them a boost when there are much healthier alternatives out there. Caffeine is safe and very effective in limited doses, but the problem is that people tend rely far too heavily on sodas and coffee.
Green tea can help to increase your alertness and combat fatigue, and it is quite good for your heart as well. It helps you be more alert and awake, but has less caffeine than coffee and contains a lot of great polyphenols and catechins. These are properties that help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The antioxidants found in green tea fight free radicals, and claims have been made that it helps aid weight loss efforts, combats heart disease, and helps with bone density. What a wonderful combination of benefits! Drinking green tea consistently over time helps keep your energy at optimum levels, so you should enjoy this supplement as often as you wish.
B Vitamins play a very important role in our body’s ability to fight stress and maintain good energy levels. Your best bet with B vitamins is to take a B-complex, so that you make sure you are getting the full spectrum of B vitamins available in one capsule. B-12 is especially well-known for a quick increase in energy when taken orally, and some people even get B-12 injections from their physician for this and a multitude of other reasons. However, you will find great results from combining your B-vitamins and not just limiting yourself to the B-12. They are all water-soluble vitamins that help in cell metabolism. Some of the “B’s” – such as B9, which is better known as folic acid – are vital for women who are of children bearing age, and other “B’s” are just as important.
Ginseng is another great supplement for energy. Some people know ginseng to be of two different types, one being panax ginseng and the other being Siberian ginseng. Really, Siberian ginseng is not truly ginseng at all. Rather, it is a different plant also known as eleuthero, which has also been known to be beneficial in increasing energy levels. There is another root plant, too, called American ginseng, but it is not as widely known because it is not as beneficial. Stick with panax ginseng if you want the best results over time. It helps to increase blood supply and circulation, which in turns provides more energy throughout the body.
There are also pills and capsules out there called “energy pills” or “fat burners.” Initially, they were used for exactly that purpose, which was to burn fat and help a person lose weight, as they would help to decrease a person’s appetite. However, they became extremely popular and went on to be used by people with night shift work, very busy people, and basically anyone looking to stay awake for longer periods of time and focus on their task at hand. These supplements contain a host of different ingredients, some of which are herbal, and they can be fine in limited doses. Because they are quite strong, however, it is wise to read the label thoroughly and follow the directions carefully. The last thing you want to have happen is for the supplement to over-stimulate you.
You can feel much better taking healthy herbal or vitamin and mineral supplements that can be combined with your healthy diet and good exercise and sleep habits. Once you have established a routine with your supplements you will be glad that you took the time to find natural and healthy alternatives to increasing your energy levels. Instead of drinking coffee or soda to stay awake when you are in a slump, you will find yourself gradually becoming more alert just by maintaining your healthy supplement routine. Take a look at the various supplements mentioned here and try them separately for a month to see which works best for you. You will be glad you took the time to do it!
