Most people who are competitive runners are training on the road these days, but there are many reasons why you should consider buying a treadmill anyway. If you have a family you may not have the time like you had before. Running on a treadmill is better then running outside because your risk of injury is like 70% less.

A home treadmill can be a huge investment. It isn't going to be nearly as costly as a car or a house, but you can count on spending around $1000 of your money on a hunk of metal and electronics that might break down and not be able to be fixed unless you spend another 500 dollars on it. Why would you waste your money on something that doesn't work that may end up just being a high priced place to hang your clothes?

Treadmills are made up of several different components which each have an important function. The most important of these components is probably the engine size. This is one of the main reasons why many treadmills don't last, people try to save money by getting one with a smaller motor, you are better off doing away with some electronics than skimping on the motor. For a home gym aim for a treadmill with at least a 1.5 horsepower motor, if you are heavier than average double it!

If you will only be using the treadmill occasionally then you may be able to get buy with a less expensive one but if you are like me and you intend to use your treadmill on a daily basis or you are the type person who may run several miles at a time then you need to pull out your wallet and invest more so that it will last. You will definitely want a machine with at least a 2 horsepower motor.

You want to be sure that the treadmill you buy can hold up to the kind of workouts you intend to use it for. If you exercise on a regular basis then you will probably want to buy a better one because you will just get aggravated with anything less. If you went to do your exercise routine and got on the treadmill and it broke halfway through you would probably get very angry. Save yourself the aggravation and invest the money upfront in a treadmill that will do what you need.
