It must be one of the worst of nightmares: the day the bailiffs came knocking on your door. What makes up a bailiff? What qualifications do they need? What gets them out of bed in the mornings?

In fact bailiffs come in two flavours. There are those who work for the courts and spend their days handing out summonses and enforcing court judgements, and there are those who are private bailiffs and spend their days collecting debts of various kinds.

Looking at some bailiff job advertisements is a good way of finding out the life skills necessary in order to make a success of the job. Some of the less obvious required attributes are to be a good communicator, having an ability to keep accurate records, and being able to offer money management advice (yes, really, this is a required skill). As you might anticipate, duties also include repossessing goods and property and visiting debtors to ask for payment.
In order to become a bailiff you need a clean driving licence. That is it; nothing else, just a clean driving licence. If your job includes collecting rent arrears, parking fines or council tax you do need to get certificated, but there is no such requirement for ordinary bailiff duties such as entering houses and taking away peoples possessions.

To get certificated you need a couple of referees, who say you are a good chap, prove that you have no criminal conviction, know a bit about bailiff law and hand over £10,000 as a sweetener. (That is absolutely true; it costs £10,000 to get certificated.)
Having dealt with the Good, an image search for ‘bailiff' on Google will quickly reveal the Bad and the Ugly. They tend to be, well, bad and ugly. You are certainly advised to make sure that your ‘safe search' option is turned on before you do an image search for ‘girl bailiff'.

In conclusion, bailiffs are best avoided (unless you are married to one, in which case avoiding is not an option). If you find yourself in debt then make sure you get some good debt advice or they might come knocking on your door.
