“My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion
Nothing can be bigger than Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” The famous (and sometimes infamous) theme song from the film Titanic is perhaps the biggest song ever created for a film. And rightfully so, since Titanic is only the highest grossing film in the world (with a worldwide gross of over a billion dollars—a feat during its release, and an achievement no other film has duplicated). Many would argue that this song isn’t exactly great art. With lyrics that go “Near, far, wherever you are / I believe that the heart does go on / Once more you open the door / And you're here in my heart / And my heart will go on and on,” it is obvious that this song does not aspire to be great art. However, while many refuse to consider this song as great music, they are willing to admit that “My Heart Will Go On” made Titanic the film that is.
“Grow Old With You,” from The Wedding Singer
“Grow Old With You” is an unexpected hit. The song was performed not by a professional singer but by an actor—comedian Adam Sandler, no less. The lyrics of the song was very simplistic, something that sounds like an Average Joe’s ode to love more than anything else. Yet with its simple lyrics and even more simpler music, “Grow Old With You” became an iconic song that remains in the consciousness of people even until today. The lyrics, while uncomplicated, are sweet and sentimental. The chorus of the lyrics goes: “I'll miss you / Kiss you / Give you my coat when you are cold / Need you / Feed you / Even let ya hold the remote control.” The lyrics’ sentiment may in fact be the song’s hook. The movie, while not completely forgotten, is hardly considered part of mainstream pop culture, but the song persists as modern day classic.
“I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing,” by Aerosmith
Aerosmith is one of music’s biggest acts; “Independence Day” was one of the biggest film of its time. Together, it created “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing,” a song that survived the scrutiny of pop culture critics even if the movie is now often seen as an overrated drivel. “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” is a karaoke favorite, thanks to its accessible lyrics. In fact, it was sang in television’s biggest karaoke-type show—American Idol. In fact, the contestant who performed the song during its seventh season eventually won the competition.
