Erotic stories are often able to stimulate a very real response from their reader. They may affect the reader's libido causing sexual arousal. They may cause the reader to imagine a scenario whereby he or she places themselves in some portion of the story, thus becoming a participating, interactive source for the reader's imagination. Erotic Stories may simply captivate a reader allowing him to imagine a situation whereby he can grow or understand new possibilities for himself or new relationships he may find attractive or interesting.

There are numerous other scenarios whereby erotic stories may have a tangible effect on their reader and his surroundings, his thoughts or his ideas. Of course these same observations can be made about mainstream stories, also. The sexually inclined subject matter in erotic stories simply opens up more dramatic possibilities in a society like ours where views on sexual subjects are so diverse.

Occasionally, erotic stories can even cross over into the realm of literature, under the right hand, even great literature. An erotic story can be seen as literature if it contains "literary merit," those things which distinguish just a story from a piece of literature. If a story has a social purpose, reasonable characters, if it in some way teaches or instructs and also includes important or unique observations about society within the story, if it is, therefore, much more than just the sum of it's words, it may be erotic literature.

If it then makes it's point aptly enough, if it rings particularly true, intensely observant and brilliant in presenting the storyline, it may even be seen as great literature.

It is not impossible for an erotic story to achieve literary merit by acting as a mirror of society and holding up its own observations about society in a way that either criticizes social trends or shows what is irrational or patently contradictory within society. If the social patterns are very obviously, perhaps ridiculously contradictory or hypocritical as is found by comparing views of very liberal segments of our own society with extremely conservative ones; the contradictions can be dramatic indeed. Brilliant observations about extremely volatile and dramatic social differences are a canvas upon which major and poignant social portraits may be painted.

In Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire, we encounter Blanch Dubois, a too sensitive, completely distraught, sister of Stella Kowalski, whose husband, Stanley is a burly, crude and insensitive son of Polish immigrants. His overt animal sexuality and total disregard for social trappings and sensibilities set him immediately at odds with his wife's sister. Blanch is a delicate Southern flower who has fallen into disrepute in her small Louisiana home town and lands in Stanley's two room flat, down on her luck, down in the dumps, and shortly down for the count.

Sitting on the rail of Stanley's bathtub, waiting for his tub to fill, is as close as Blanch will ever again get to sipping mint juleps on the banks of the mighty Mississippi. When Stanley Kowalski finally rapes Blanch, it is for Williams, a triumph of carnal lust over Southern sensibilities but an almost anticlimactic voyeur's view of the sexual act as Blanch has already been dismembered, derailed and defiled. Streetcar is a modern tragedy. Williams is a master erotic story teller.
