Traditionally ‘dashboard’ refers to the control panel located under the windscreen of a vehicle which displays instruments and controls regarding the vehicle’s operation. The name as well as the format has been incorporated into business technology. Digital dashboards used by businesses have some resemblance to a vehicles dashboard.
Digital dashboards are a fairly new technology used in the corporate world. Dashboards provide easy-to-use access to a corporation’s data and help organizations track performance. The Digital Dashboard helps corporate personnel in the decision making process.

A digital dashboard is a visually discerning display of data for monitoring personal or work group contributions to overall goals of the business. Executives, managers, and business users can easily observe data presented on tables, graphs, trend indicators, gauges, heat maps on the dashboard. They are able to immediately understand their organization’s position upon viewing these indicators.
The dashboard can display a wide range of information ranging from specifics to general data. Financial, sales, human resource, as well as recruitment and project management are only some of the information that may be represented on an organization’s dashboard. Dashboards were made to provide almost up-to-the-minute information and so users are aware of the organizations current position.

Digital dashboards are also called dashboard reports because they provide graphical reports on a company. These are especially useful to the executives of an organization as they provide a variety of data sources combined into a single view which allows them to speedily diagnose problems and decide on solutions.
Businesses which use the digital dashboard can opt for either of three types. There is the one that is used in conjunction with the internet, the desktop application powered by desktop widgets and the stand alone application software.

Digital dashboards are a combination of data charts on a company’s status which are easily accessed from one place. The data is presented in real time and facilitates optimal decision making by an organization’s managerial staff. There are other ways in which businesses make necessary information available in real time. This however, involves much more effort, gathering information and compiling spreadsheets with the data. Some companies only address this at weekly or monthly intervals. A digital dashboard is more efficient in gathering and representing the data that is needed.
Though digital dashboards are efficient it must be kept in mind that they are programmes and in order to function suitably they must be monitored. The monitoring is not an ongoing manual process but the selection of suitable measurements to represent the type of data. Sales performance figures, balanced scorecards and the key performance indicators (kpis) are considered ideal factors for use with digital dashboards.
