Whenever we work on Outlook PST file, there is last modification date stamped on it. Also, when you archive a PST file (Personal Storage Folder) manually or by using MS Outlook Auto Archive feature, Outlook assigns a modification date, which is also known as archive date of the folder.

For this, the application follows a standard methodology to archive messages. It calculates the sent, received, and modified date and time of messages and displays the latest among them as the last modification date of messages. But many of Outlook users report that when they try to access one such archive, the modification date doesn’t appear as expected. That is the last modification date of PST file gets changed as expected. There could be a sign of PST file corruption, which is stopping the date to be modified properly.

To illustrate this, consider, you archive an Outlook PST on an external storage media and note its modification details. After some time, when you try to restore data from PST (probably, because your computer crashed), the file fails to open. You observe that the modified date of archive PST has got changed to a much earlier one. Additionally, on attempting to open the file, you get:

“Archive_filename.pst is not a personal folders file”

Where, archive filename refers to the name of your archive PST.

Reasons behind this issue

Well the reason is quite obvious now; it’s the corruption in Archive PST file that is raising this issue. This can occur if Outlook was opened and accessing the PST, at the same time you were backing up the file. Other reasons for corruption in PST file are unexpected system shutdown, software malfunction, issues in backup media, virus infection, 2 GB file size limitation and more.

Resolution

This problem can be resolved if you use the following measures accordingly:
First of all, check for another backup that can be used to restore Outlook PST data.

Secondly, copy the corrupted PST to your computer and run Outlook Inbox Repair Tool ‘Scanpst.exe’ to repair the file. Scanpst.exe is an inbuilt utility that comes with MS Outlook and its hidden file. So make sure to enable the view of hidden and system files before trying to locate the file.

Last but not the least; go with third-party Outlook PST file recovery software to repair Outlook .PST file efficiently.

Software to repair Outlook is an outstanding and highly efficient tool to repair corrupt, damaged and inaccessible PST files of MS Outlook. The Repair Outlook software is built with powerful repair algorithm to repair PST files corrupted due to various hardware, software and external reasons where scanpst.exe does not resolves the case.
