Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and is home to almost 500,000 people. Being the second most visited city in the UK after London, you'd probably expect to find the majority of jobs in Edinburgh situated in the retail and tourism sectors, but surprisingly this is not the case. Let's have a look at the top five employers in the city:

5. HBOS
Halifax Bank of Scotland employs over 6,000 people in Edinburgh. Its decadent headquarters are situated on The Mound, an artificial hill in the centre of the city and which dates from the 1700s. Despite suffering from recent controversy regarding a huge necessary government bailout and accusations of harassment made against staff, since the takeover by Lloyds TSB the institution has now become part of the biggest retail bank in the UK.

4. University of Edinburgh
The University of Edinburgh is one of the oldest in the UK, and boasts over 20,000 students enrolled. The institution currently employs almost 8,000 employees with roles ranging from researchers and management, to catering and administrative work. It is frequently listed as a Top 10 university in official lists and in 2002 separated into three separate colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.

3. RBS
In keeping with the City's role as a primary financial centre, the Royal Bank of Scotland is also a significant employer with almost 10,000 people employed. The head office is situated at St Andrews Square where it has been based since 1821. The bank prides itself on its range of jobs available, and over the past three years has been placed in the Top 50 "where women want to work" by The Times.

2. City of Edinburgh Council
The City Council is based on the Royal Mile and employs over 15,000 people across the 17 ward area. The council is currently run by a liberal democrat/Scottish National Party coalition and covers six committees including Culture and Leisure, and Economic Development.

1. NHS Scotland
The National Health Service is the biggest employer in Edinburgh with about 20,000 staff and covers the Lothian area. There are 12 hospitals in Edinburgh city, including Western General Hospital at Crewe Road which specialises in Cystic Fibrosis - as well as the renowned teaching hospital: The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
