Aberdeen is well known for its number of parks and green areas, and has been awarded the prestigious Britain in Bloom award many times (even to the point of being banned after 9 straight years of winning). Aside from the many simple local parks, the city is also home to the famous Duthie Park which contains its winter gardens, house, tropical house, and the Japanese gardens in commemoration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hazlehead Park consists of woodland and stretches over 180 hectares and is cared for by Aberdeen town council. The abundance of green space in the city has no doubt contributed to its recent Fairtrade City honour in 2004.
For those with curatorial and historical interests, Aberdeen is also home to a diverse number of museums. In celebration of the city's seafaring background, the Aberdeen Maritime Museum at Shiprow details the way the North Sea has shaped the local area and the world - with a collection that focuses on shipbuilding, fishing, and the oil industry. In contrast to this, the Satrosphere Science Museum looks into the future with its hands-on exhibits, and seasonal and permanent job opportunities.
Aberdeen is also home to its own art gallery located at Schoolhill. Entry to the impressive marble-decorated building is free, and it is home to works by the impressionists, the Scottish colourists, and craft from the Aberdeen area. Curatorial job and volunteering opportunities in applied art, archaeology, fine art, and maritime history are available via the Aberdeen City Council.
For those with an interest in media and music, the city has opportunities in these sectors too. Publisher, Aberdeen Journals, prints two significant newspapers: the Press and Journal, and the Evening Express. Aberdeen is also home to the Northern branch of STV and several independent radio stations including Northsound and Original 106.
