5 Key Points for Starting or Moving Your Business Online

5. Niche
The importance of you or your product being niche online cannot be underestimated. By researching what you are selling or offering you will soon establish how competitive your market is - and although there might be far less people looking for a particular specialized product than the large generic ones, if you can offer exactly what that narrower target need then you are likely to find success sooner, instead of being swamped by an unwelcome gang of already-established market leaders.
4. Expertise
Along similar lines to the above, be sure to offer something of which you have a particular expertise. Although we may be experiencing something of a backlash to the term "expert" in this age of innumerable souls who proclaim themselves so (and whose actual knowledge is quite dubious), it will be far easier for you to succeed online if you don't need to learn your market from scratch.
3. Think outside the ‘website box'
When a lot of people consider moving or going online, they tend to think of establishing a website that shows their stuff, and leaving it at that. Essentially, it must be remembered that the internet is far more than just a bunch of sites - and those that succeed are the people who can discern what works best for them and who can manage a healthy balance between their site and communicating via blogs, social networks, wikis, forums, microblogs, etc.
2. Patience
In addition to thinking beyond your beloved website, you will soon discover that establishing yourself online involves a great degree of patience. This is something to bear in mind when pouring over the analysis of traffic to your blog, before updating your Facebook page, and fine-tuning the spelling errors on your site. Do not expect to be considered an expert by everyone overnight.
1. Content
Finally, it is an oft-spoken mantra that ‘content is king'. Consider your campaign as a whole, and ask yourself what your presence on the internet offers. If it is merely a bunch of products that everyone needs to be buying then that is the first step to advertising yourself online - but not really existing there. Additional content, such as articles, essays, photo stories, news, interactivity, etc, will all serve to make your presence more relevant in web-users lives - provided, of course, that these are of honest, transparent quality.
